Welcome to the Mission Hill Gazette Online

I’m sure this photo will change soon, but as of December 13, 2005, it showed a picture of Sister Judy Weldon, one of the most influentual people I met on my mission working at One Brigham Circle. It’s amazing how much Mission Hill has changed since I was in Boston 8 years ago. I need to go back!
First, I’ll admit that I am a huge fan of 104.5 The Zone here in Nashville, but only the local talent. When they switch to the satellite of Fox Sports Radio, I find other things to listen to (generally XM or CDs). Last night on the Sports Zone, George, Willy DAUNIC (emphasized to show the larger media outlets how to actually spell his name) and Darren were talking about some issues that happened with FSR when the Detroit Red Wings player collapsed and nearly died from his heart stopping. Apparently, they treated the situation VERY lightly and acted like lockerroom fools. Wisely, Willy pulled the broadcast back to local coverage stating he apologized for listeners having to hear that mess, and somehow, a NY Post writer heard the mess.
Fortunately, he sided with Willy’s take, and FSR has since launched into a diatribe against The Zone concerning it, with a local listener calling in and slamming on the local talent of The Zone. As far as I’m concerned, the PD of The Zone should find another national Sports Radio feed to fill in the time, or hire some cheap local guys to keep the programming all local. I know I’d love to do a night gig personally, and get back on the air, but it’ll never happen.
So why am I commenting about this? 1. I love radio, and I have ALWAYS hated what the national syndication is doing to local radio. I think the best decision that some of the stations I worked for made was to stay local instead of going satellite (except for the 12A-6A daypart). When it comes to sports radio, it seems that ESPN is the only major that has a clue to how to act themselves. Sporting News Radio wasn’t bad, but the talent level was definitely lacking compared to the bigger boys. FSR is a joke in my opinion. Just like their TV counterparts, they try to go after the basest market of 18-24 Males. The strange thing is that even when I fell in that demographic, I wouldn’t have appreciated the crude and stupid humor they employ. It’s like Sports Radio dumbed down to the nth degree. 2. It my’s my blog and I’ll comment if I want to.
Call it the relative pain of working in an advertising company and trying to integrate systems between PC and MAC. The Yellow Page Tracking tool I’ve been working on has some reporting stuff in it, so after attending the Microsoft Launch Event in Atlanta last week (read: Yay us. Linux sucks. Apple sucks. We rule) I thought I would give SQL Reporting Services in SQL 2005 a shot.
At first blush, I like it. It’s really quite easy to setup a decent looking report and having it fire in a relatively intelligent manner. I DON’T like having to implement it on a WebForm via the ReportViewer, but I guess if it works… Now, for the problem. The control isn’t fully supported on anything other than IE6 (for PC). In Firefox, Opera, Flock, Opera for the Mac, Safari, Netscape, and even IE5.5 it doesn’t allow for the Print option to even come up, because it’s an ActiveX Control.
I’m really hoping that if Microsoft puts out a Service Pack for this product (which they surely will), they’ll include support for non-IE browsers.
