As of 9/26/2011, here’s what I use to geek out:
Main Work Portable System
Lenovo ThinkPad W520 Portable Workstation
- Intel Core i7-2720QM Quad-Core 2.2 GHz CPU
- 16GB DDR3 RAM
- 500GB Seagate SATA-II 7200RPM Drive
- 320GB Western Digital SATA-II 7200RPM Drive
- NVIDIA 2GB Quadro 1000M Video Card
Having been a Dell employee for 5.5 years, I never thought I’d say this, but Lenovo ThinkPads are far better portable systems than Dell Latitudes. The hardware is more solid and professional, the nice little software packages (like the Network Profile Manager, the Power Management Tool, etc.) are so helpful, they just make life even easier. I’m running Windows 7 64-bit SP1 (and dual booting to a Windows 8 Developer Preview VHD) but seem to live in VMWare Workstation now. I’m running a Windows 7 VM for my development work (so I can restore to a snapshot if things get nasty), an Ubuntu Server x64 11.03 VM for managing FOG (an open source Windows imaging package), a Windows Server 2008 R2 VM with SQL Server “Denali” CTP 3 and Visual Studio 2011 Preview running, and a VMWare ESXi 4.1 instance hosting a Windows Server 2008 R2 install with vCenter Server (that I’ll be using to test upgrading to 5.0 in the future).
